(Missing first five minutes of introductions and jokes....I'm sure I missed some goodies.)
We (in this class) are the elite - the esoteric.
Pg. 113 - Art of Memory - (Loci - Location comes from this - Locations help us memorize things.) 113 was on the unfrequented church and the 100,000 verses the man knew when he was young, and the many more he added as he grew.
*Something I found on Loci - The Method of Loci is a technique for memorizing many things and has been practiced since classical antiquity. It is a type of mnemonic link system based on places (loci, otherwise known as locations), used most often in cases where long lists of items are concerned. It was taught for many centuries as a part of the curriculum in schools, enabling an orator to easily remember a speech or students to easily remember many things at will. There are different techniques and approaches for the "Method of Loci", and in medieval schools (as in Aristotle, Topics, Bk. 8), "Ars Memoriae" was considered to be equally a part of dialectics as of rhetoric.
Wisdom of the Myth Tellers - Read Prologue and 1st Chapter - The other chapters will be read and told by groups.
Orality and Literacy - A Canonical Book on the Subject we will be examining.
(Because we have 3 books, we will be able to look at them microscopically.)
Putting skull and crossbones by the names of those who are not here!
Memory Theatre - Loci and Images - "Beautiful Eyes" (Kate Baudoin, sorry I butured the name, or something like that :) being perhaps the meaning of the name of one of our classmates. We looked at her, thus begin to remember her.
In Oral Traditions, we take mental pictures of her, thus remember her. Kate is the one with "beautiful eyes" and this will be on test! Remember it!
"The more you look, the more you see. The more you look at Kate, the more beautiful her eyes become." -MS
Prospero - Shakespeare's The Tempest - He begins telling his daughter who she is by what she remembers.
First Assignment - MEMORIZE ALL THE MUSES - THEIR MOTHER IS MNEMOSYNE (MEANING MEMORY). - Thus, The Muses are the daughters' of memory.
*Their names are: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania.
If you do not have every one in the class memorized in a few weeks, he will fail you. ;)
"Let me tell you a funny story." - Tai before he told us of his name fluke as a baby.
*I have a story about my name as well. Not very great, but a story. It's that my entire life I thought my official name was Christopher, and not until last year, when applying for my passport, did I see it was not. According to my typed birth certificate, I should be writing my name "Christoper".....I think it would actually be cool.... and maybe I will, someday... just to throw the world off.... but that's story on my name. Exciting, right? ;)
Meme (meaning is "a cultural item that is transmitted by repetition in a manner analogous to the biological transmission of genes") - Virus going through the restaurants - What can I bring you? How can I be of service to you? (those are what they used to be) - Now it's "What can I gett yaa!?" :)
"Oral Culture is very concrete" -MS - Imagistic - It can not be too woo woo or high falluting because it is what it is, coming from the one speaking it.
What is the last thing you see before you go to sleep? Pay Attention to it. * Assignment *
Go to an unfrequented church.....sit in it and pay attention. *Also Assignment ;)
